When a 1997 Nissan Sentra was found submerged at the Kingston Mills Locks in June 2009, it initially appeared to be a tragic, bizarre driving accident. Inside were four women—three teenage sisters and their father’s first wife—trapped beneath the surface. But as investigators began pulling back the layers of the family’s life in Montreal, the “accident” narrative completely fell apart.
